I stand by SG-1 abusing the weirdness of their lives to get what they want

Newly Archived Fic Post #8

I was feeling antsy so I went through a significant number of short fics in the last couple days. Since all of the links are for micro-fiction, I tossed in a few more than usual, including two drabble collections—(1) Daniel/Sha're and (2) Daniel Gen Fic.

As before ALL fics have been polished.
★'d fics are personal favorites.

Stargate: SG-1: Daniel Jackson Collection
Fair Power, PG, Daniel, angst, episode related, "Fair Game" (100 words)
a very early drabble, which you can tell because it's in 1st person

Being Daniel Jackson, PG, Daniel, team, friendship, episode related, "Fallen" (500 words)
I'm partial to Arrom and should write more fics with him

Role Model, PG, Daniel, Jack, angst, friendship, episode tag, "Prototype" (230 words)
the last line kills me and I wrote it

Stargate: SG-1: Daniel/Sha're Collection
Not Like That, PG, Amaunet, Daniel/Sha're, Season 1, "Children of the Gods," something of the host remains (100 words)
Sha're has a shitty deal and I should write about her more

Time to Wake, PG, Daniel/Sha're, Season 3, pre-"Forever in a Day," dreams, waking up (100 words)
ha ha, I'm so fucking mean

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
One Way Ticket, PG, Giles, angst, friendship, episode related, "Tabula Rasa" (740 words)
Giles as father figure who doesn't know what he's doing is still great

Good Night's Sleep, PG, Buffy, Willow, friendship, humor, loud neighbors, Season 4 (500 words)
I had forgotten this fic—it's pretty funny!

Firefly
Nekkid, PG, Mal, humor, episode tag "Trash" (100 words)
short and sweet

Not Out of Gas, PG, Wash, Zoe, humor, farting (110 words)
this is hands down my most mature and sophisticated fic

Dinosaur Envy, PG, Wash, Zoe, humor, dinosaur (780 words)
I adore Wash's dinosaurs (and his allegories)

[livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers has never seen Star Wars. [livejournal.com profile] marilla82 has never seen Buffy. They each think missing the other is stranger. I'm here to prove one of them right.

Please feel free to pimp this.

Buffy Relaunch? Oh, Please No

  • May. 27th, 2009 at 1:29 PM

For those that haven't heard, the Kuzuis (the couple that own the rights to 'Buffy') have expressed an interest in making another Buffy movie. That headline sounds exciting and wonderful, doesn't it? Don't get too excited, though, because of the following reasons:

    1. They're planning it as a relaunch—not a prequel or a sequel to any existing 'Buffy' story.

    2. They're doing it without Joss.

Counting Down From Seven Three Oh Eighteen Twenty-Five I'm incredibly biased in this discussion, but even without loving Joss and not wanting Buffy without Joss's vision and experience to back it—this is a bad decision. It's not just that fans will whine and gnash their teeth over their beloved canon being besmirched; it's the fact that the Buffyverse has been off the air for 5 years. Just 5 years. That's not a long time. A Star Trek reboot, for example, serves to connect the nostalgia of original viewers of the series to a new generation who can grow to love it. It's also been 30 years since the original series aired, a generation.

Into Every Generation. . . . This article covers a lot of the reactions that have been had in the past day or so about the announcement. One thing it mentions is that this could be the story of the next generation of vampire slayer (which would make one hope that they don't call it "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," though I'm sure they want to cash in on the name). I'm into that idea (though other people are not). HOWEVER, Buffy canon has done much to prevent that kind of story and I would be horrified to watch that canon be destroyed. Tales of other Slayers? I'm totally down with that. But based on the current canon, that limits the stories to pre-Buffy, post-Fray, or working within the confines of the Slayer Army.

If the Apocalypse Comes, Beep Me While I'd love for there to be another Buffy movie (or another Buffy series), I really think it's too soon and totally the wrong time. In 20 years I'd jump up and down for more Buffy—even if it was without Joss. I'd take my kids to the movie, tell them about how it affected me, and pull out my DVDs and let them fall in love with the concept, the package, the characters, and everything. But that's 20 years from now; the length of time it takes for a next generation. Until then, anyone who wants another Buffy story, I highly recommend you start reading the comics.

I've seen this on a few journals (most notably with [livejournal.com profile] princessofg and [livejournal.com profile] tenaya) and I have to post it because it's exactly how I feel about fandom and why I try not to put down my friends' favorite shows (also why I will give shows repeated chances).

Your Friends Are Not Watching the Same Show You Are (And That's Okay)

[livejournal.com profile] teyana did something interesting with this and named the shows she's watching and I saw that and thought, "Yes, I have to do that." So, I'm doing that.

These Are The Shows I’m Watching

Angel )

Firefly )

Stargate: SG-1 )

Stargate: Atlantis )

Saiyuki )

Fullmetal Alchemist )

What are your shows?

[livejournal.com profile] getaway_machine made me start thinking about top five lists and—while this is somewhat painful to do—I think I've got a top five fictional characters list:

1. Daniel Jackson
2. Remus Lupin
3. Edward Elric
4. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
5. Cho Hakkai

I went for character complexity on this list and I should note that Raphael is Beyond Lists.

Also, while I'm doing Top Five Lists, let me mention the ones I'm actually sure of:

Top Five Buffy Episodes
1. The Zeppo
2. Restless
3. The Body
4. Hush
5. Once More With Feeling

Top Five Angel Episodes
1. Not Fade Away
2. I Will Remember You
3. A Hole in the World
4. Waiting in the Wings
5. Deep Down

Top Five SG-1 Episodes
1. Menace
2. Revisions
3. Prototype
4. The Other Side
5. Abyss

And finally,

Top Five Fandoms
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, SG-1
2. Firefly, Harry Potter, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiyuki
3. Farscape, Chuck, Peacemaker Kurogane, Ultimate Spider-Man, Heroes
4. SGA, Battlestar Galactica, Pushing Daises, Veronica Mars, Alias, Wonderfalls
5. Doctor Who, Highlander, Death Note, LotR

TMNT and Star Wars defy classification. Like seriously.

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting some fandom because I have too many. Also, this list only begins to explain how I look at fandom. It would take a few essays for me to talk about why I have them grouped liked this.

Anyway, discussions on any of the above is encouraged, especially if you start formulating your own top five lists. I love lists with five things in them.

Fandom Highs and Lows Equal a Medium

PSA: My internet has been out at home since yesterday afternoon. My online activities may be spotty for the next few days because of that. Hopefully the problem will be fixed by the time I get home. *crosses fingers*

Finding a Fandom Medium
Right now, my fandoms are being way too conflicting. Last Saturday was the 10th Anniversary of Buffy and filled with much Whedon joy and happiness. Next Friday (March 23rd) is the release of the new TMNT CGI movie and there’s all sorts of exciting goodies available online with sneak peeks. (The clip from Wondercon is here, if you haven’t seen it—omgawesome.)

And smack dab in the middle of these two exciting events is SG-1. One moment I’m flying high on excitement because of happiness in two of my first and favorite fandoms and the next I’m crashing down because it’s the “end” of my last great obsession. *sniffs* But I think this is all happening at the same time to remind me of something.

Buffy is celebrating 10 years and is coming back in the form of a Season 8 comic book series that’s going to be sanctioned by Joss and therefore canon (out today!).

TMNT is enjoying its fourth movie, 14 years after the last big screen feature. Not to mention that TMNT has survived at least 4 comic book runs that had to shut their doors and it’s in its second cartoon series. And that’s only scratching the surface of its life.

Fandom goes on. Creators find ways to resurrect their characters and shows. This isn’t the end for SG-1.

So even though my fandom heart is tugging in different directions, it’s all telling me the same thing: Fandom is unending.

I’m looking forward to an SG-1 mini-marathon tonight and saying a fond see-ya-soon to some of my favorite characters.
