[livejournal.com profile] getaway_machine made me start thinking about top five lists and—while this is somewhat painful to do—I think I've got a top five fictional characters list:

1. Daniel Jackson
2. Remus Lupin
3. Edward Elric
4. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
5. Cho Hakkai

I went for character complexity on this list and I should note that Raphael is Beyond Lists.

Also, while I'm doing Top Five Lists, let me mention the ones I'm actually sure of:

Top Five Buffy Episodes
1. The Zeppo
2. Restless
3. The Body
4. Hush
5. Once More With Feeling

Top Five Angel Episodes
1. Not Fade Away
2. I Will Remember You
3. A Hole in the World
4. Waiting in the Wings
5. Deep Down

Top Five SG-1 Episodes
1. Menace
2. Revisions
3. Prototype
4. The Other Side
5. Abyss

And finally,

Top Five Fandoms
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, SG-1
2. Firefly, Harry Potter, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiyuki
3. Farscape, Chuck, Peacemaker Kurogane, Ultimate Spider-Man, Heroes
4. SGA, Battlestar Galactica, Pushing Daises, Veronica Mars, Alias, Wonderfalls
5. Doctor Who, Highlander, Death Note, LotR

TMNT and Star Wars defy classification. Like seriously.

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting some fandom because I have too many. Also, this list only begins to explain how I look at fandom. It would take a few essays for me to talk about why I have them grouped liked this.

Anyway, discussions on any of the above is encouraged, especially if you start formulating your own top five lists. I love lists with five things in them.

The first thing your lists make me realize is that I am fannishly challenged. When it comes to fandom, I am truly nothing but a dilettante. Because though I watched Buffy and Angel faithfully during their entire runs, and loved the shows, I cannot name a single episode by name. I think I can guess at the identity of 4) and 5) on your Buffy list (the totally silent one and The Musical, respectively -- both great episodes, I agree), but I have no clue what any of the others are. And if I were asked to name favorite episodes even by description rather than name, I'm not sure I could. I could name some favorite pieces of the story arcs, and some scenes that stick in my mind, but favorite episodes? Hmmm...

The only show where I can actually name episodes by title is Stargate SG-1 (oh, and the original Star Trek).

So, anyway, my SG-1 top five would be:

1) Lost City
2) The Torment of Tantalus
3) Beneath the Surface, 2010, Fire and Water
4) Abyss, Threads, Heroes, Menace
5) Point of View, A Hundred Days, There but for the Grace of God, Tin Man

Ok, so I cheated.

By the way, I always find these episode lists fascinating. There are certain episodes that come up a lot, but every person has one or two that most people find run-of-the-mill but were somehow special to that person.

I don't know if you're fannishly challenged to not know episode titles or if I'm just really obsessed. Though, in this case I am really obsessed because I can name all the episodes of Buffy in order (and can probably do it backwards as well).

If you're wondering:

The Zeppo is the one where Xander borrows his Uncle Rory's car and sleeps with Faith and there's the Sisterhood of Jhe and the Hellmouth is opened, and. . . .

Restless is the one with the First Slayer and all the dreams and "Like a shark." "But on land!" "And with much less fins." and the Cheeseman and "We need to build a fort." "I'll get pillows." and. . . .

The Body is the where where Joyce dies and there's no music and Buffy throws up on the floor and Willow can't find her blue sweater and Anya notes that Joyce will never again have fruit punch and Xander blames the wall, and. . . .

Did I mention that I'm obsessed with Buffy? Really, the SG-1 thing seems tame in comparison to the Buffy obsession.

:D

You really cheated at your top five list. If I had cheated, Heroes and Lost City would have made my list, as would The First Ones and Enemy Mine (because I love Chaka). I might have also included A Hundred Days and Forever in a Day which were in my top five list a few seasons ago.

You can name all the episodes in order? Ok, that's impressive. And obsessive. And shows you have a really good memory.

I recognize the other Buffy episodes from your descriptions and yes, those definitely rocked. Except I can't say that for sure in the case of "The Zeppo" because I never saw the whole episode. I think I only caught the tail end, because I remember Faith going, "Ok, have to shower now," and me thinking, OMG, Xander slept with Faith? I guess that means I'm not at the level of a true fan, I'm just at the level of I Really Liked That Show, because a true fan would not have rested until they'd seen the whole episode. Actually, there are several episodes I've never seen. I should really go up on Netflix sometime and rent the DVDs.

Yes, I did really cheat on my SG-1 top five. It's just that I can pick out my first and second favorites, but after that they clump together and I can't decide on the order. I wanted to put even more episodes in there but I figured I was already pushing it enough.

I have to laugh, because short of the BIG episodes, I am NOTORIOUS for not knowing the titles of episodes. I'm always like "Oh, the one with Xander and the car..." Or "The one where Summer doesn't like Book's hair..."

Also? Your last list...isn't that more like top 20-somthing fandoms? *laughs* How are those catagorized?

And...as one of your friends who LOVES ANIME AND DOESN'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS HOW MUCH YOU TALK ABOUT IT...I want to know your Top 5 FMA Eps and FMA Characters...

I am obsessed. It's what I do. :D

Okay, so the categories of fandoms.

1. These are the ones I totally and completely love on a ridiculous level and am obsessed with and know a disgusting amount about.

2. My next level of obsession and love. These are ones that I kind of wish I knew more about and would probably be more in love with if not for the top three that already exist (thus taking up all my obsessive knowledge).

3. These are the ones that make me really happy and sometimes I might get obsessive about them and really chatty and go on a binge, but they're just never going to enter my inner sanction of obsession.

4. See above, but less so.

5. I'll watch the whole series and enjoy it, I might even talk about it some, but I'm not going to get all crazy about it.

Hmmm . . . maybe I can explain this simpler

1. CRAZY OBSESSED OMG!
2. OBSESSED but not totally crazy.
3. ENTERTAINED WITH HAPPINESS!
4. Entertained with happiness.
5. Entertained calmly.

And then TMNT and Star Wars are BEYOND and are like part of me. Buffy is close to that, too, actually.

1. Ed
2. Hughes
3. Roy
4. Havoc
5. Al, I think

Episodes
1. Episode 25
2. Episode 37
I DON'T KNOW THE TITLES OR THE EPISODES!

I'll be rewatching the series, too, and I'll pick my favorite episodes just for you. :D

Abyss isn't an episode I watch very often but it's such an awesome episode. The Jack/Daniel interplay in it is incredible and Jack is taken to incredible levels.

And Menace? I LOVE MENACE. XD The end kills me every time.

Now that you mentioned BSG, I have that on my list as well (and already have the mini series and the first season). I just have it on the "Canadian" pile, because of Callum and so forgot to list it in the email.

Else we'll be stuck discussing the Leoben episodes. ;)

Angel is a lot harder for me to pick because the episodes are awesome. So I sometimes decide completely different things. But I'm pretty sure that my one and two stay consistent.

Last night we tried to do Top Five (canon!) Kisses. It was surprisingly difficult coming up with five canon kisses that are super-awesome! Which is possibly because we like too many non-canon couples, but whatever, making lists should not be hard!

Oooh, Top Five canon kisses? Hmmm . . . Okay, I'm having a lot of trouble with this.

1. Buffy/Angel at the end of "I Will Remember You"
2. Crichton/Aeryn in that episode in Season 1 whose title I can't remember
3. Ned/Chuck with the plastic wrap!
4. Xander/Willow clothing fluke!
5. Jack/Daniel . . . uh, that's canon, right?

You know, of your fandoms sg-1 is my favorite. BUT....this comment makes the WHOLE post: went for character complexity on this list and I should note that Raphael is Beyond Lists.

I like your top five fandoms list because there are SO many. That is one of the things that crack me up about you - your ability to multi-fandom. Although I suppose I could also blame you for my interest in some fandoms or my renewed interest in others because of this :P

They really should pay me for promotions. ;)
