My sinews have withered grievously

I like how I put that into Google and the soulless machine summary immediately popped up with a helpful definition and usage as though this is some common phrase that we all know from our school days.

Having finally beaten Wall World and done some catch-up on Final Fantasy XIV, I've been thinking about what I want to play next. I want to play through Actraiser, which I've played but never beaten in the past, but after that I think it's time to finally play through Final Fantasy III. So I scrolled through my Steam game list to find it, since I know I booted it up not that long ago to make sure the Japanese language option works, and I find it and it says:
Last Played: April 24, 2024
2024? Emoji eye bugging out But no, it wasn't that long ago, was it? It can't be, I clearly remember doing it. How can it be two years ago?

I do think a lot about how the Plague Years really feel like they threw the world out of balance. [instagram.com profile] sashagee and I have been together for six years but it feels much longer than that, and it felt much longer than that even a couple years ago. On the other hand, my life where I was going out most nights, back in 2018-2020, wasn't that long ago but it feels like an entirely different lifetime. This is also the weird part about being older is that my memories feel unstuck in time--things that happened ten years ago (like my last trip to Japan) are clear in my mind and don't feel any older than the Hawai'i trip I took recently. Intellectually I know it's because memories have no time sense, their vividness is based on the emotional impression they leave on you, and I also know that your sense of time changes when you get older because a year is an increasingly-smaller fraction of your life, but it's still weird to have all these events I know took place at quite-different times seem like they might have happened recently.

Still going to play Final Fantasy III this year. I wonder if that'll be fresh in my mind in a decade?
Cordelia walks along the edge of the pool, following the monster as it swims under water. She gets very upset.
CORDELIA: It's me, Cordelia? I know you can't answer me, but... God, this is all my fault. You joined the swim team to impress me. You were so courageous. And you looked really hot in those Speedo's.(chuckles)
CORDELIA: And I want you to know that I still care about you, no matter what you look like. And... and we can still date. Or, or not. I mean... I understand if you wanna see other fish. (crouches by the edge)
CORDELIA: I'll do everything I can to make your quality of life better. Whether that means little bath toys or whatever.
Xander walks up behind her.
XANDER: Uh, Cordy?

PWHL Detroit is confirmed. PWHL Vegas has gone from well sourced rumors to leaked. PWHL Hamilton is teetering on the edge between rumored and leaked. All the sourcing being accurate so far means that San Jose being the 12th and final team is very likely.

One reason this is interesting is that it points to a division/conference system and reduced travel being what's guiding this expansion. Well, that and which arena controllers will play ball. Most arenas are paid for and technically owned by the city, but a lot of control/profit goes to team ownership. (Here in Portland we have the Gold Standard of bad deals where if you buy a soda at a rock concert at Moda, profit even from that goes to the Blazers ownership. The Blazers! The only thing surprising about the Blazer's coach recently getting arrested is that I thought they all had infinite legal protection! I didn't think we could arrest any of them!) Edmonton, Dallas, and probably Denver and a few other cities, fell through because the main team's ownership can rent space to the PWHL but can't own the teams outright at this time. (Ten bucks says that both the Red Wings and the Kraken ownership have rights of first refusal on the PWHL teams they share space with)

Arenas paid for by tax payers can't be used for optimal returns for the cities because billionaires can only make some money out of the deals, not all of the money. And people are mad at the PWHL about it, saying they need to change their ownership model, rather than than being mad at the bad deals their city approved. (Again, I live in the city with the worst arena deals, a Live Nation venue being built against the clear wishes of the citizens, but I am angry at the right people... and also if the current Moda remodel funding bill gets cut to necessary HVAC and structural work only I will take a victory lap because I *have* been engaging people one on one to explain how fucked the deal is and comparing it to the actually decent deal Seattle has for CPA)

Anyway, not to defend a guy who is so rich that he committed to funding the PWHL for ten years whether or not it made any money because the entire cost of the league, salaries to travel to space rental, is a rounding error in his bank account, but changing the ownership model at this point would be bad for the league.

Also, at a point it looked like a done deal that we were going to let the Blazers take $600mill from Portland's climate fund to remodel Moda to increase the amount of box seats and high end experiences, reducing overall capacity. We were poised to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into them reducing the amount of seats and making tickets less financially accessible to Portlanders. Fortunately, enough people have screamed about it that it's looking less certain. Now the Blazers are threatening to leave Portland. And I'm like... promise? Pretty please? I will help you pack! I never want to hear/see the words RIP CITY again as long as I fucking live. (The NBA is currently also expanding, Seattle is making a new team... so... move to where? Fuckers ain't got nowhere but here and they need to start acting like it.)

tldr: One reason the PWHL is hype is that they create additional revenue and economic activity for existing city investments. With the ten-year funding commitment it's a negligible risk - very solid reward proposition, if the people who control city assets are willing to play nice

Yesterday I was feeling as if I was coming down with something (on top of being tired from lack of sleep); my throat was slightly sore and I just felt unwell. I slept well last night and feel much better today but still slightly congested so I guess I was actually coming down with something. Violet and Eden had both had respiratory things at the end of last week so I was pretty much expecting it to pass to me.

When I first woke up I was still feeling somewhat "off" and also it was fairly cold that early in the morning (for the time of year), so I decided to hold off on going for a walk until mid morning, when the forecast promised it would be fine and sunny. I was tempted to skip exercising, but I thought getting out in the sun might help how I was feeling. I went out around 10:15 and although there was a cold breeze it was lovely and sunny, and I do feel better now. It's actually a perfect spring day, clear and sunny and about 16C/60F.

I've taken to rolling over at my usual wake time (6 ish) and sleeping for another hour. It does not matter mostly. Except today I was leisurely drinking my coffee and interneting when I realized it was 7:45 and the pool would only be available until 8:30!!! I slammed on my suit and grabbed my bag and hustled to the pool and managed to just get in my 30 mins. Fitbit did chastise me for getting out early but Fitbit did not see the old ladies taking over the pool for their Aqua Fit class at 8:30.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, I need to not dawdle.

But all is done now and it was good.

Bonny is getting needy. She's easily bored anyway but now she is tired of her four walls and no fridge and so wants company. Her son brought her a fabulous puzzle for mother's day so yesterday we met in the elbow and clawed out the edge pieces and started sorting the others and got it going. She was appeased for a while. No clue what today will bring BUT as she taught me way back when, my job is me and not anyone else.

One of the SusanDennises - the one in Ohio - has signed up for every Republican candidate's mailing list. OR maybe an enemy of hers signed her up. Using my email address. So, all day yesterday, I kept getting mail from these candidates. spam spam spam - do I want to block? sure spam spam spam

Today is house cleaning day. She usually comes about 1:30. I either go run any errands I have or puzzle in the elbow. She takes about an hour. It's not a deep clean but it's exactly what I like. She cleans the bathroom and kitchen and the vacuums and wipes down the hard wood. Oh and she does do a good job of dusting. It's perfect and a luxury service. Especially since I don't have to hire or fire or even think about her employment. I don't even have to leave my apartment - but I'd rather.

I do have errands I could run today but don't have to. That will be a 1:30 decision.

I got all my projects organized. My knit and crochet projects. Each in its own basket with everything it needs and notes about what I'm planning. I like having lots of different things to work on. I got a new idea for an older project last night and that's what's going to get going this morning.

But, first, I really should get dressed.

Psychological safety

  • May. 12th, 2026 at 1:59 PM

I've just had a cute, kinda meta conversation about psychological safety at work.

I mentioned it offhandedly in the big team meeting this morning and just now a colleague called me just to ask about it. He said he hadn't heard of it before but he was interested. I'm no expert but I tried to explain that it's about feeling safe to challenge people, to be unpopular, to be more of your whole self at work.

It was nice that I could use an example where he once asked me about a new colleague he started working with who uses they/them pronouns; he wasn't sure what that meant or how to use them so he asked me.

And of course him asking me this is itself an example of psychological safety. Something that he noticed himself at the end of the conversation. He's cool, I really like him.

Greetings, friends. Today for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth I bring you not a Kingdom of Knuffel avatar, but a Wild Knuffel. Wild Knuffel are adoptables made by users, for users! Anyone who wants to try their hand at art and use the Knuffel base to draw on can create one, and submit them for release. Once released, other users can adopt them.

Here's one made by user HanafuruLove. When I told her that I'd adopted him, she saw that I'd named him 'Too Cool for Skool' and she found that hilarious

It's possible to click on the preview box above if you're curious about seeing him in his full glory (all the details HanafuruLove added to him!) or if you want to try feeding and playing with him. I love his tattoos, piercings and of course, his skateboard. The expression on his face speaks volumes

The fare is $3. If you commute, you take the bus or train twice a day, five days a week. Every week you spend $30*. You'd have to be caught and ticketed more often than once every five weeks in order to make this math not work out in your favor. And that is never going to happen, because there aren't nearly enough enforcement agents. As it is, the ones we have cost more than they make back. It's all a racket, but you'll notice the buses still aren't free because Albany is still in control of the MTA.

* I'm making a few assumptions here, first, that you're not sharing the same card among several family members with staggered schedules; once you spend $35 in a week on the same card, subsequent trips are free. Also, this is the full fare for most buses and trains, but not for the express bus.

Plague is upon us

Ruin has come to our family.

...which is to say, Laila brought home a sickness from preschool. On Thursday poor Laila was crying because her tummy hurt so much and at [instagram.com profile] sashagee's urging we took her to the doctor. They did an X-ray and found no blockage or anything concerning, and she was still eating normally and using the bathroom, so they told us to keep an eye on her and come back if she got worse. She did not, but we did--[instagram.com profile] sashagee spent most of Saturday hunched over the toilet and I spent a big chunk of last night laying on the floor with a cold hand towel on my forehead trying to prevent the same thing.

Currently at work but neither [instagram.com profile] sashagee nor I have gotten much sleep in the last couple of days. Hopefully nothing too complex comes up.

Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

  • May. 12th, 2026 at 10:43 AM
In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Whilst the US deals with... everything going on like the Voting Rights Act being gutted and a possible $60M grift on mobile phones

Meanwhile, not to be outdone, the UK Government is dealing with major losses in last weeks local Council Elections (and Scottish and Welsh Assembly elections) by fracturing over whether the Prime Minister (admittedly a thoroughly unpopular one) should react by stepping down. Because that ALWAYS works, just ask the Tories.

On the plus side, the Scottish Assembly had two openly trans Members voted in, including, with delightful irony, one in Edinburgh who represents the constituency JK Rowling lives in.

I caught up with "Madame Web" on Netflix before it disappears at the end of the month. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I honestly found it quite enjoyable, if rather clichéd and a bit camp (not always a negative). Whilst it did have the air of a TV pilot given a movie budget, it's a shame we'll likely never get to see any of these Spider-Women again... :(

The Law of Unintended Consequences

  • May. 12th, 2026 at 10:57 AM
watervole: (Default)

Those who  love 'The Good Place' as much as I do will probably recognise the quote.

'The Law of Unintended Consequences' says that it's not possible to live a perfect life in modern society.  Everything we do impacts negatively on the environment or involves low-paid labour, unethical working practices, etc.

But there are some things we can do.

We can't win, but we can nibble at the edges.

Shampoo

Advertisers work hard to convince us that we need to wash our hair ever single day to keep it perfect, but our ancestors didn't have shampoo.  Shampoo didn't reach the UK until the eighteenth century.

I used to suffer from regular problems with my ears.  I thought it was earwax build up, until the lady syringing my ears said it was thin slivers of skin.

I wondered what was triggering it, and considered that shampoo might be a possible cause.

Taking a deep breath, I began cutting out shampoo at a week long folk festival - where so many people were camping that no one would notice if I was looking a mess.

My hair got greasy, but not as badly as I'd expected.  I carried on with the experiment...

After two months of not stripping all the natural oils in my hair and scalp, my body stopped over-producing them in an effort to replace them.

Over 30 years later, I still haven't gone back to using shampoo, and my hair isn't greasy.  I wash it with water, and that's all.  Brushing distributes the oils evenly and keeps it silky, but not greasy.

Another member of my family who went the same way, briefly tried shampoo recently, and promptly got dandruff (which they'd never had before).

Not saying this will work for everyone, but you can save a LOT of money, and reduce your environmental impact as well. (detergent kills fish).   If you do go for it, cut down gradually.  Reduce the amount of shampoo you use, and reduced the frequency of washes.  If you cut down gradually, then you'll avoid the greasy phase.  Maybe use some sort of tiny measuring cup to measure the amount you use?

In my defence, most of 2026 so far has been spent dealing with incapacitating levels of fatigue, which might finally be getting better (and that needs to be a separate post).

But the major problem is that I wanted to re-read Cascade, the first book in the trilogy, before starting Blight.

And while I loved Cascade -- here is my rave from way back when -- it produces an overwhelming sense of dread in me, even more than it did so on first read, because it captures, with remarkable precision and effectiveness, the sense of living in a liberal democracy that is teetering on the edge of ceasing to be one, and the stomach-dropping sensation when things begin moving unspeakably fast.

It's a very good book, but -- you see the problem.

Anyway, in recent weeks I finally got myself to re-read Cascade, and then I tore through Blight in a few days. Weirdly, I found it a much less difficult read because it's (both politically and environmentally) a post-apocalyptic novel, in which some kind of fightback is beginning.

Anyway it's fucking fantastic, without any of the common middle-book-of-a-trilogy doldrums. A really spectacular and unique mixture of wild magic, cosmic horror, and organizing for revolution, the last written with gritty specificity. The author is dead and all that, I don't know what's firsthand knowledge and what's research, but this is a book that (for example) writes with deep credibility about what it feels like to be in a crowd being tear-gassed.

As well as being a very good book, it also feels it's maybe a psychologically useful book to read right now.

I would like to do a proper write-up but I still have no idea what my energy's going to be doing day to day, so in the meantime here's a hype post, and if you want a review here's [personal profile] james_davis_nicoll's:

https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/land-of-hope

ETA: Also it's on the Aurora Award shortlist for Best Novel:

https://www.csffa.ca/awards-information/current-ballot/

Ob!disclaimer that the author is an internet acquaintance, but I do in fact love the book.
