Previous Episode: Episode 1.20 “There But For the Grace of God” here.
Episode 1.21 “Politics”
Planetary Tally: Season/Series Total: 19
Episodic References: “There But For the Grace of God”--Daniel talks more about the alternate reality in which he received the coordinates for the launch site of a Goa’uld attack on Earth. “The Enemy Within”--Kinsey says, “Teal’c. With an apostrophe, I understand,” calling back to when Jack pointed that out during Teal’c’s interrogation. “Children of the Gods”--Jack mentions that Samuels has been against the Stargate Program from day 1, then Kinsey begins with the mission to Chulak when recapping SG-1’s excursions through the ‘Gate (clips of Teal’c helping Jack free SG-1 and Kawalsky taking out the death glider with a rocket launcher). “The Nox”--Jack brings up the fact that Apophis and his goons killed SG-1 once (clips of the firefight). The movie and “Singularity”--Kinsey asks if they’ve seen Goa’uld ships and Jack recounts that they have (clips of Ra’s ship and then of Teal’c and Jack identifying Nirrti’s ship in orbit around Hanka). “Cold Lazarus”--Sam brings up that the Goa’uld destroyed the crystal-energy beings’ entire civilization (clips of Sam communicating with the crystal and of Jack getting knocked on his ass). “The Enemy Within”--mentioned again when Samuels brings up Kawalsky’s snake problem (clips of the end of the episode when Teal’c subdues Kawalsky-Goa’uld). “The Broca Divide”--the myriad plagues that can be brought through the ‘Gate are mentioned (clips of Hammond requesting the quarantine of Cheyenne Mountain and Jack requesting sedatives). “Brief Candle”--Kinsey points out that Jack nearly died when infected with nanocytes (clips of Sam returning to tell Jack the bad news and experiments with nanocytes).
Quote(s) of the Week:
Sam: Daniel, it’s not that we don’t believe you.
Daniel: So you do?
Jack: No. It’s just that--we don’t believe you.
Jack: All right, wait a second, let me get something straight here. ::gestures to Sam:: Engaged?
Sam: It is theoretically possible.
Jack: It’s against regulations!
Sam: I’m talking physics, sir!

”Me and Sam? But what about us, Danny?"
Hammond: It costs nearly a billion dollars just to turn the lights on around here.
Jack: How about a bake sale? Yard sale? Garage?
Teal’c: You seem more apprehensive of this hearing than you are of battle.
Jack: I prefer battle, actually.
Kinsey: Colonel. I’ve heard a lot about you.
Jack: Don’t believe a word of it, Senator. I’m actually a nice guy.
Kinsey: If they’re so strong, why did you switch sides in the first place?
Teal’c: Because what is right cannot be measured by strength. Your world values freedom, I wish that very same freedom for my people.

”I value freedom. I think that your head should be free from your body.”
Jack: And you think God is going to save us?
Still in Kansas: Jack: “And you were there, and you were there, and there’s no place like home.”
Introducing: Senator Kinsey

Be a US Sentor!
Learn to plaster on a false smile and travel with an entourage!
Placate your constituents while you manipulate the system! Why?
Because you have the backing of political power and the buck!
Being a US Senator is for you!
Hello Again:Maj. Lt. Col. Samuels
Stargate Mythos: The SGC is under a private review by Senator Kinsey, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the Senate; the SGC is referred to as “Area 52” and costs $7 billion 407 million a year to operate; the first mission to Chulak (“Children of the Gods”) took place on February 10 (Jack wrote his report on February 23); “The Broca Divide” takes place in March; SG teams sometimes revisit worlds they’ve previously explored (Daniel mentions that SG-2 recently re-visited Argos); Kinsey shuts down the Stargate Program; apparently it takes a year and several months for Apophis to assemble the forces necessary for a full-scale invasion of Earth (to avenge the death of Ra)

SG-1 lines up for a police lineup.
Fashion Week: They’re still in their green and black when Daniel is patched up in the infirmary. Jack and Sam wear their dress blues in the hearing, Teal’c has a blue jump suit, and Daniel can apparently not yet afford a suit as he’s wearing one of the green uniforms they wear on missions.
Auto Destruct: Season/Series Total: 4
Full Body Exam: Daniel’s shoulder was patched up from the staff blast received in “There But for the Grace of God,” though not by Janet.

The nurses’ arm is totally ruining my happiness. In other news,
that’s a love note to me that Daniel is asking Jack to proof read.

Respectfully Yours: 3--Jack utters the phrase to Kinsey, following up with a rejoinder about where Kinsey can find the Accounting Department; Jack says it, but Daniel cuts him off, also saying it and finishing up with “the good Senator is an ass”
Chain of Command: Lt. Col. Samuels isn’t Jack’s superior, but it’s still snarky when Jack tells him, “You’ll always be ‘Sparky’ to me.” Jack snarks to Kinsey the entire episode--notably, he tells Kinsey “As long as you’ve got an open mind”; Jack talks about not being “as slick” as Kinsey and Daniel and starts speaking in facts rather than metaphors; he also snarks when Kinseys mentions how expensive running the SGC is, commenting that Accounting is on Level 3; Jack corrects the spelling of “Goa’uld” in his mission report when Kinsey mispronounces it as “goo-auld”; Jack has a wee bit of sarcasm in his voice when he points out that because they brought the Broca-virus through the ‘Gate they saved an entire race of people; Jack also tells Kinsey, “Where do you get this bureaucratic bull? You’re talking suicide.”

”What the hell am I going to do with him?"
Putzing with Props: Jack impatiently taps a pen while waiting for Kinsey to show up. Jack flips his pen in frustration when Kinsey angers Teal’c.

Dear Alli-- please find better things to do with your
time than reading slash. Yours, Jack
Jack O’Neill Cliché Count: We get a “For cryin’ out loud” when Jack is annoyed at Kinsey’s impression of the SGC.
Daniel’s Dead: Season/Series Total: 3
Murray Alert: Season/Series Total: 8
Techno-Babble: Samuels says that he expressed his awe of the Stargate as a technological marvel. Sam argues that it’s more than that; the Stargate represents a giant step in our understanding of the universe. “We have learned more about astrophysics in these few months than we have in the last 50 years.” Sam informs the Senator that if the Goa’uld come in ships they will attack from orbit and we will be seriously outmatched. Sam points out that if Goa’uld technology can generate shields around individuals, they can do the same thing around armies (Daniel adds “and ships”). Sam explains that they believe that Daniel may have experienced “an inter-dimensional transfer to an alternate reality.”

Kinsey is so boring that Hammond is falling asleep.

Daniel Obsession:
What’s the Daniel of it?: As Daniel is patched up in the infirmary, he tries to convince SG-1 that the alternate reality he experienced on P3R-233 was in fact real. Jack politely tells Daniel to keep his mouth shut about the alternate reality and to keep it “as an ace in the hole.” While a little confused, Daniel acquiesces. Daniel helps to argue the benefits of the Stargate and winds up being led by Kinsey through the story of Pandora’s Box. Daniel doesn’t do a great job of arguing the benefits of the ‘Gate in the context of Kinsey’s analogy, so Jack steps in to salvage. After Jack attempts to reach Kinsey, Daniel calmly says that they believe the Goa’uld are launching an attack on Earth from ships (meaning that closing the ‘Gate isn’t going to do a damn thing). Kinsey pompously replies that the Goa’uld will regret taking on the United States military (hold on, I need to laugh for a minute), and Daniel snarks, “Oh yeah, we’ll just upload a computer virus into the mothership” (for those unaware, this is an enormous spoof on the movie Independence Day in which the heroes successfully execute that exact plan). Daniel points out that the Jaffa weren’t used to fighting humans with our level of technology. Daniel notes that SG-2 recently made contact with Argos (which Daniel calls “Kynthia’s planet,”you can see what he’s thinking about) and that they are living long, productive lives because of the SGC. Sam and Daniel share a very meaningful look when Kinsey proclaims that he’s heard nothing to convince him to approve funding for the SGC. Daniel then launches into a speech about knowing that the Goa’uld are coming and is then completely shot down as soon as the words “alternate reality” enter into it--because apparently they can accept aliens, wormholes, nanocytes, transferred consciousness, energy weapons, and beaming technology, but alternate realities are just too far-fetched. Daniel very calmly mentions that he’s not crazy (something he’s probably had to say to people about as many times as I’ve had to say it). Daniel very firmly tells Kinsey he’s a fool, and Daniel? he’s never wrong.
Translation Time/Artifact Alley: Daniel hops on the “We love the Stargate” bandwagon, noting that it gives them insight into human cultures that are thousands of years old. Daniel gives a brief retelling of the story of Pandora’s Box.
Caffeine Habit: Apparently no coffee is allowed in hearings.

Perfect Vision: Daniel is sans glasses (his glasses are safely tucked in the top of his t-shirt) in the infirmary at the beginning of the episode and stays that way until he peers over Jack’s shoulder to see the report on the mission to Chulak.
Oh, Danny Boy: Hammond refers to Daniel as “our boy.” It’s cute. (just mentioning it, it doesn't count towards the total)
Season/Series Total: 4
Shooting a Load: Season/Series Total: 4
Mop Up, Aisle 5: 5--Daniel’s arm at the beginning of the episode; cute in a sling; smoldering under Kinsey’s tirade of the “worthlessness” of the SGC; being snarky to Kinsey; arguing passionately about the alternate reality; calling Kinsey an ass

I’ll believe you. I’ll believe you all night long.
