Stutters and Stammers

What would the day be if I didn't have a slightly strange question to ask?

Can anyone think of any characters that canonically stutter or stammer? I would prefer characters who are fandomy, but as long as I'm familiar with the character, that should be awesome.

Thanks!

ETA Great suggestions from everyone! Thank you! If you want to add more to the discussion, I'm always happy to have more, but I do have what I need.

Also, um, I'm a huge retard and think I need for someone to hang on to my Whedon Card for a while. I forgot TARA *headdesk* I'm a loser. In penance I'm going to watch "Hush" and "Family" tomorrow. (And then insist that someone give me a Buffy quiz so I can retake my Whedon Card. OY.)

There is the ever lovely Reg Barclay from Star Trek: TNG and Voyager, who is a prime example of stuttering, even on the days he's in a more confident mood.

Crap. I have NO IDEA who that is. Is there a particular episode you can think of with him in it? I could steal McKay's TNG DVDs.

He was introduced in "Hollow Pursuits", which is S3, I think. He's been in at least one other Trek series as well as First Contact. I *love* Dwight Schultz. :-) Here's his IMDB entry. That'll give you the rest of the episodes.

I was going to suggest Barclay as well. He's perfect. He did some episodes in Voyager, but the character had been tamed (at least a little) by then. You're better off with TNG episodes as source material.

Very much so. Plus, they're *excellent*.

I don't have access to Voyager anyway (and I kind of need this ASAP).

Thanks!

Do you need video, or just something to watch to get the idea? I know iTunes has some Star Trek content, and Barclay IS in First Contact, but just for a scene or two.

I just need to get the idea (and maybe some dialogue), but it's no worry. McKay has all seven seasons of TNG. With the episode titles, I'll be able to get everything I need.

I guess it depends on what you mean by stammering. Daniel Jackson, for example, speaks quite well, most of the time, until he realizes the rest of the world is off on a tangent rather than keeping up with whatever's going on in *his* brain. :-) Then he stammers. :-)

Good ol' Barclay from TNG might be more what you're thinking about. He was *such* a great character. ;-)

I was planning to use Daniel as a stammering character. I really need a character with a stutter, but I wouldn't mind some other suggestions of stammering characters.

DOH! McGee from NCIS has a tendency to stammer, though he's gotten better through the years.

I don't think he stammers the way I'm thinking of, though.... Hmm... different ways to stammer. There's an idea. Again, awesome! :D

His is mostly nervousness caused by an intense desire for Gibbs not to shoot him. :-):-)

The hardest part about finding such characters is that they tend to not fit the usual formula for 'heros' on tv. Though, it's probably why characters like Barclay stand out so much, not to mention how we fic writers/online folks identify so strongly with him. :-)

OMG, it's one of the best shows ever. Seriously. For as much as I love Buffy, Firefly, and SG-1, had it continued past a season, I think I would have easily been able to call it my favorite show EVER.

Look it up.

Verbal Kint! KEVIN SPACEY! *flails* Also, watch as I am anti-helpful, yet oddly productive all the same.

Derek punched her lightly in the shoulder and she laughed. At least this would be the same. The whole world could change and they'd have each other. He hoped anyway.

“You're staring, Nance.”

“Sorry,” he mumbled, and looked down at his hands. His necklace was looped loosely around his wrist, so that the magnetic energy would be able to draw on the bearings if it needed to. The top set of gears ticked steadily away, keeping connected. It didn't tell time, but it was counting down time nonetheless.

Amelia knelt in front of him and cupped her fingers under his chin. “No matter what I do Derek, or what happens, you, above all others, have the right to stare.”

“That's your vanity talking.”

“A little bit, yeah.” She leaned forward and pressed her lips just to the right of his.

It's just kind of occured to me how well Nate's love for odd things works for that. He woud totally be ok with bedding some other guy's betrothed while said other guy runs off and bangs his partner. He would actually find immense humour in it, I believe. I know I do. :p

Michael Palin's character stuttered pretty harshly in "A Fish Called Wanda." It was a major plot point in the movie, too.

It seems to me that Amanda Plummer's character in "The Fisher King" had stammering problems, but it's been forever since I saw the DVD.

I don't think this is fandom-y enough, but Anthony Blanche from Brideshead Revisited has an unbelievable stutter, written down in prose and everything!

Ooh, I actually was doing this to write an article on stammering speech for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_grammar. Do you have the book? I'd love to see how they punctuate the stutters there.

I thought that might be what you were planning, so I hoped it might help! Hooray!

Yes, I do have the book, it's one of my favourites! I actually looked for on-line quotes to link to in my first comment, but couldn't find any.

Anthony Blanche is incredibly gay. Haha! Hold on, I'll find you a paragraph or two...

Right, here we go-- all quotes are from 'Brideshead Revisited' by Evelyn Waugh, Penguin Twentieth Century Classics (UK Edition, can't find the blasted date though)

'My dear,' he said, 'I couldn't get away before. I was lunching with my p-p-preposterous tutor. He thought it very odd my leaving when I did. I told him I had to change for F-f-footer.' - p34

To Sebastian he said: 'My dear, I should like to stick you full of barbed arrows like a p-p-pin-cushion,' and to me: 'I think it's perfectly brilliant of Sebastian to have discovered you. Where do you lurk? I shall come down your burrow and ch-chivvy you out like an old st-t-toat.' - p35

'And I said, "S-s-sebastian, do you realize that those s-sycophantic s-slugs insulted me last night, and but for the warmth of the weather might have given me a s-s-severe cold," and he said, "Poor things. I expect they were drunk." He has a kind word for everyone, you see; he has such charm.' - p52

And a quote that references his stutter:

Anthony had lost his stammer in the deep waters of his old romance. It came floating back to him, momentarily, with the coffee and liqueurs. 'Real G-g-green Chartreuse, made before the expulsion of the monks. There are five distinct tastes as it trickles over the tongue. It is like swallowing a sp-spectrum.' - p53
