SG Birthdays

theemdash: SG-1 classic team (SG-1 Team)
On behalf of [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris I ask my massive and highly SG-knowledgeable flist: What are Sam and Jack's birthdates?

Here's everything I dug up:

Daniel
(Because everything starts with Daniel.)

Daniel's birthday is July 8, as said in "Forever in a Day."

In "1969" we learn that Daniel was "about 4 and a half years old [in 1969]" (which someone needs to teach Daniel the meaning of "about") and therefore born in 1965 or 1964, making his DOB July 8, 1965 or 1964. Fanon tends to go with the 1965 year.

Sam
In "Ascension" Orlin makes a comment about Sam's birthstone being emerald which would mean her birthday is in May.

"Entity" has her birthday listed on screen as December 29, 1968. However, I very rarely trust prop references since they are often inconsistent. Does anyone know of a second source for this information or if there is a conflicting reference? (btw-this date was pulled from the StargateWiki as I'm not that good to remember Sam's birthday.)

Jack
"Fragile Balance" has a prop reference for Jack's birthday as October 20, 1952 (again, as referenced by the StargateWiki). However this is a prop reference and I'm about 80% sure that there is a conflicting prop reference in an earlier episode, though I can't remember which one. My other point of confusion is that I thought Jack was only 9 years older than Daniel (that of course could just be fanfic leaking into my brain, though).

So, learned flist, I know one of you has either done the research or remembers where to find it. What are the conflicting information and accepted answers?

Also, I'd just like to point out that this post is not about Fullmetal Alchemist and you should all thank [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris for that.

As I recall, the nine year gap is fanon, not canon, though I am peevish about Jack being that much older than Daniel. Not for 'shipping reasons, mind you, but because I don't believe that Jack is that old. RDA is the same age as my Dad (57 this year), but he doesn't look it to me when he's playing Jack, so I think the 12/13 year gap is too much.

Did that make sense at all?

[livejournal.com profile] green_grrl jogged my memory below. And I agree with you on the Jack not being that old thing. I prefer the 9 year gap and I kind of want to find contradictory prop evidence so I can clap my hands and say, "See? Prop references are bogus."

You are right on with Daniel and Sam -- that is as much as we have.

The conflict with Jack is spoken canon: when he was rapidly aging, he said something about being forty. Personally I don't take that as set in stone, because it's such a round number -- I'm 43, but I have to stop and do the math to remember that exactly. "Forty" works as an approximation of a decade for me, especially since they were dealing with people for whom even one year was an impossible concept. But you can take your pick -- nine years 0r 13 years difference, since both can be backed up.

wasn't it you who did that great comparison astrological chart for daniel and jack's birthdays? and why did I not bookmark that? *rummages*

Yes -- click my meta tag! (I used 1952, BTW.)

That's where the 9-year difference started. I knew that. Now I feel stupid for not remembering that. I knew that. *digs a finger in her ear to shuffle around all the fandoms*

I'm pretty sure there's another episode with prop evidence listing a different DOB for Jack (something prior to Season 4, if memory serves). For some reason I want to disprove the 1952 date. I don't know why since I clearly don't have a problem with a 13-year age difference, but it just seems wrong to me.

Hmm. There's also Jack's appearing-disppearing Vietnam-era medal on his dress blues -- that impacts his age.

I don't mind Jack being 13 years older than Daniel. My own parents are 9 years apart, and I know plenty of couple with bigger age gaps.

Well, I would suppose that if it's sometimes there we have to assume he actually has it and just sometimes forgets to wear it. Maybe he doesn't wear it when he's trying to look younger. ;)

Yeah, my new fandom, my favorite pairing is (at least) 14 years apart. And during most of canon the younger one is um, underage. *headdesk* So it's not the age difference that bothers me, it's I think just the age difference for them. If that makes a lick of sense.

"Forgetting" medals just doesn't happen! That's just flat out bad prop masters. Like when Jack went back and forth between one and two stars in The Shroud. *headdesk*

You totally LIED! This post was about FMA! :-P

(Hey, I've read Harry/Snape. Most of it is Harry over 16, but I can go there. In fic. In RL, of course, ew.)

The stars bothers me so much. ARGH. Why don't they catch that?

LOL! The post wasn't. I made no promises about the comments. Besides, FMA actually is making me think about SG-1 because they have a State Military and (apparently) alternate worlds and just . . . gah. I'll shut up now.

the other commenters have it right, as far as I can remember. I researched this a long time ago when I was trying to come up with a reasonable year for Charlie's birth.

I am kind of a fan of astrology as an aid to character building, and I really do buy a late May birthday for Sam. I think she is definitely a Gemini and not a Taurus, but close to the end of Taurus would be really reasonable for her. That's my personal canon, anyway.
[identity profile] green-grrl.livejournal.com wrote:

Agreed! Totally a Taurus. The prop date doesn't work for her. I also meant to mention a great analysis of Sam's age here.

[livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton did a Sam canon meta recently, and Sam's age was a big discussion. She might have information in that post (a couple of weeks back).

And you could use this info in that thing that we were talking about, just to make sure your numbers are right.

I think there are about 6 people on my flist who are encouraging the FMA flailing. And you are first among them.

Or maybe second. Both you and [livejournal.com profile] katilara have really been encouraging my newest obsession.

And I don't need to "check my numbers," if I know anything about SG-1, it's Daniel (and his birthday which is OMG a day before mine).

[Oooh, I edited my typo.]

Edited comments, FTW! :D

FMA is chocolate, kittens, and Christmas rolled into one, sort of a chockitmas. But with alchemy.

I'm possibly crazy.

I've heard a fair number of arguments for spoken canon trumping prop evidence and vice versa, but to me what matters most is that they directly contradict each other, from which I conclude that I can pick whichever one I like better. 'Brief Candle' Jack saying 'I'm forty years old!' works just fine for me. As I recall, the 'Fragile Balance' ID with his 1952 birthdate also listed his name as John J. O'Neill, which I feel no compunction about rejecting in favor of Jonathan O'Neill, so I'm perfectly happy to say the hell with 1952 too, when it suits me. (Actually I think I've used different ages for him in different fics, and called him Jonathan at the same time as using the 1952 date ... mix 'n' match.) I have no problem with a 13- or 14-year age difference between Jack and Daniel ... and imo fic writers should just use whatever they're comfortable with, or whatever they think makes most sense for the characters as portrayed in their particular fic. It's fun to try to piece it together from fragments of canon, but when the canon's inconsistent it can get hair-tearing pretty fast.

and to sum up, after having read all that fascinating info on Sam, there is a good consensus for May 1967 to have been her birthday, and I personally love that.

I still want her to be a gemini, though, so I'm going with very late may for my personal canon!

I love that one query has sparked this discussion and I'm glad [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris made it a post rather than just asking me in an email. It's really interesting to see all the different little things I've missed -- or actually just completely forgotten! -- that others have picked up on.

...yeah, I have nothing more to add, except hi :)
