When I signed up for NaBloPoMo, I got the idea to post things with a bit more content than my usual fandom flailing. Of course this wouldn't be my journal without fandom flailing so I had to "find the fandom" in this more content-ful posting.
Since I've been getting more into anime fandoms—which I'm sure is perplexing and disappointing to some of my SG-1 fellows—I've been considering why I am drawn to these specific fandoms, why I am drawn to these specific characters, how on earth I can possibly be drawn to these two completely different stories! All of this led up to some very thinky thoughts about the nature of my personal fandom and finally this: a series dedicated to exploring my personal fandom, why I follow certain fandoms, why I get so involved in some, and, most importantly, how my fandoms relate to each other. I'm planning to cover a number of topics—that I hope will be of some interest to you—to explore the many, many connections I have uncovered with a little self-reflection.
Core Fandoms While there are 30 or more series that I have followed through to the end (or will follow), I will be mainly focusing on what I consider my "core" fandoms. These are the fandoms that mean the most to me emotionally, not just the ones in which I am actively involved. So, the posts in this series will have quite a bit on Whedon-verse, SG-1, Harry Potter, TMNT, Saiyuki, and FMA (mostly because it's new and shiny). Also, I'll be looking back, back, way back to my first fandoms and how they may have influenced my current preferences (yes, that means Star Wars and Transformers).
Spoilers As a warning to people who are not caught up in all my fandoms, or who haven't yet explored one or more of them, there will be spoilers in these posts. As a courtesy, I am planning to drop in spoiler warnings for anything that seems major, but there is a high probability that you will be spoiled for a few minor things.
Take a Chance I will probably be talking about a fandom you don't know; I hope that doesn't put anyone off. I strongly encourage you to take a moment to see fandom through my eyes and learn a little something about a fandom you don't know. Honestly, I think you'll be surprised and you may even walk away with a new fandom to explore.
Upcoming Posts I'm not exactly sure how many posts I'll be making in this series, but for now, you can look forward to the following topics.
I am very much looking forward to starting this. The first post should be up by Monday.

Em's Favorite Characters and Why They Die
That one makes me sad and say awwww!. I am interested in your ideas about why, though. :)
I actually do have a handful of favorite characters who don't die (or haven't yet died), but I do think that there are certain similarities between some of the characters that influence why they might have died in the series (or why they might die later in the series).
We don't share all the same fandoms and not always the same vehement level of love for the ones we do share, but I always enjoy seeing your reactions to each one and reading what you think. Saiyuki, for instance. I don't feel an urge to investigate it, but watching you love it is a great thing. Does that make sense?
FMA is one I *have* looked into once you dove in there. I'd remembered seeing it on tv sometimes, but it never caught me. Once you went giddy, I began searching it out. I've managed to see a few early eps now, and I like it.
Oh, and spoilers don't worry me. Pretty much ever. It's extremely rare that I don't want to know. So reading all about series I might watch later is a good thing not something I'd avoid. :)
Be back this evening.
Saiyuki, for instance. I don't feel an urge to investigate it, but watching you love it is a great thing. Does that make sense?
It makes sense to me, though I have to flail and say, "OMG BEST EVER!!!" I like watching people be happy with their fandoms, even if I don't get their fandoms.
FMA is one I *have* looked into once you dove in there.
FMA has broken me. I was mildly aware of it as being something I'd seen at conventions before, but it always seemed like something just bordering on the potential to be annoying. But now I totally. get. it. and have no problem with seeing it everywhere (even though you don't see it everywhere, just I'd have no problem if I did see it everywhere).
I'm so happy that you've said that you like it! :D I'm loving it so very much so having someone else like it too is very exciting. I wish I had scans of the manga I could pass along, or avi files of the show, because I want to share my new shiny fandom! All I can really do is ask about your favorite characters. *pouts*
I'm looking forward to more of your NaSpaPoMo.
Aw, don't pout! Though it is cute ;) - I'm hunting FMA up online. I just have to take the time again to watch more of them. I have seen maybe five of the first ten episodes - not as eps 1-5, just five that are among the first ten. And episode 47 or so. (Yes, I watched one *way* out of order. :P None of the others were available.)
Favorite character? That'd be Ed. *nods* I'm with you on loving that he goes ballistic after height comments. I really like the "magical science" aspect, the fact that Ed is so powerful and doesn't need a circle.
I don't get slashy or feel fanfic-y, but I do want to watch it for itself.
Okay, that's now two people eager for the Why They Die post. Clearly I'm going to have to put a lot of time and thought into that one.
I can't follow you many of the places you go, and I seem to be very serially monogamous with my fandoms. You've explored way more than I have.
But I'll follow along as I can, and know that I'm wishing you well and hoping you have fun, wherever you go!
*hugs*
OMG. I'm not doing that, am I? I in no way mean to ease away from SG-1. I still love my archeaologist and my colonel and all the angst and romantic and wacky adventures they get into. Besides, whenever I get an idea for a fanfic, I default to Jack/Daniel still. Heh.
I do think that my fandom participation palet has gained a few new colors. So, 3 years ago I was writing almost exculsively for SG-1 and now I'm writing pretty steadily in 3 fandoms (actually, that's a lie as most of my production is still SG-1 fic). Man, I need to post a new SG-1 fic, don't I?
But I'll follow along as I can, and know that I'm wishing you well and hoping you have fun, wherever you go!
I thought you might find this interesting since it's going to be all meta-y. I love thinking about fandoms and figuring out what makes them tick.
And don't worry, I have no intention of leaving SG-1. If nothing else I still have 3 WIPs to finish! ;)
My list is very short. But then I didn't discover fandom as a way to enjoy shows and movies and books until more recently. So yeah.
anyway. Am looking forward to it. and YES you DO need to post some J/D fic you've got some lying around! *bats eyes fetchingly*
Note to self: Clarify my interpretation of "following fandom."
I've followed at least 30 fandoms, that is to say series, but I haven't actively participated in all of them. I've written fanfic in 10 different fandoms, I think, but have only been what I would call "active" in 5 of them. "Active" for me means posting multiple fanfics, engaging in discourse, and doing those insane things I do like volunteering time at conventions and making trivia games.
Err. . . okay, with me it's probably relative since I babble on end about fandom, but, yeah. After writing that list, I'm boggled by me, too. Hee.
I've been following shows in an obsessively fannish way for over 20 years, so okay, some people juggle geese.
you DO need to post some J/D fic you've got some lying around!
I like the assumption that I have J/D fic just lying around. ;) Hmm . . . when I get home I'll see if I have anything half-finished. I know I have a J/D WIP but that requires too much work to finish up.
Also, you should consider this series as "A Few Reasons Blue Should Watch Buffy and SG-1." ;)
I should have a macro that says that.
This looks to be interesting. I'm especially looking forward to your thoughts on TMNT. And where did my TMNT icons go? I have a butt-ton in my icons folder, so why isn't one uploaded? >.<
You make me want to do it for my fandoms and myselfI mean...what?
I didn't hear the obsession spreading.
