Moonlight: Strangely Familiar

I wasn't really interested in watching Moonlight, but then my anger got the better of me and I DVR-ed it.

For those that don't know anything about Moonlight, allow me to sum it up: It's about a vampire detective in Los Angeles. Sound familiar? It gets even more familiar. Apparently the vampires in this universe aren't like the vampires of mythology. Huh. And our hero, Mick St. James is a "good" vampire who was "in it for himself" until he helped a blond girl who he then wanted to protect.

*headdesk*

I'd say that it looks like Angel meets Beauty and the Beast (because I think that they're trying to capture the romance from Beauty and the Beast), but it's a little too much Angel. If CBS wanted a vampire detective show, I know one they could have picked up a few years ago.

The thing that really sent me over the edge? Their tag line for the season promo is "discover a new kind of hero." Yeah, new.

Sadly, since there is a dearth of both vampire shows and Jason Dohring, I'll give it a few more episodes, but I am not happy about this.

I just want to know if Jason Dohring knows any other way to act because his character was just like Logan! Gah! Other than that I pretty much had your thoughts on the show, though in less detail.

I kept seeing Logan as a vampire and that kind of prevented me from taking the character seriously. Also, I think it's the writing, but Jason just wasn't as interesting in this as he is on Veronica Mars.

Actually I found that picture rather funny but you're right, it did make taking the character seriously because I kept seeing Logan as a 500 year old teenager. :P I think the attitude worked better on a spoiled rich kid than on a half-century old vampire.

And Mick doesn't seem all that likable to me, either. I like the blonde, but I can't pinpoint why, because she's annoying. (Where the heck have I seen her before?) And what is up with the guy who played the psuedo-vampire? He was Dracula in Buffy, played Vlad the Impaler in a movie, and now this! Is he *trying* to get typecast? LOL

I have to admit that I have a wierd jonesing for a hurt/comfort scene between Mick in the girl involving a sunlight overdose, but otherwise, I actually nodded of a few times there in the last twenty minutes. Thank Gaia I didn't miss SGA!

I didn't get a feeling for Mick either way, but I think I could like him if I wasn't so completely annoyed at CBS and Joel Silver.

The blond girl looks. like. Elizabeth Rohm (Kate Lockely). And that bothered the hell out of me. Just another way in which it was too much like Angel.

Rudolph Martin plays vampires and killers. That's just what he does. He's been in CSI, too, playing a killer.

SGA was better than I was expecting, but sometimes that show has a little too many problems, you know?

Yeah, I thought she reminded me of Kate too much too. But She also reminds me of the chick from that Who ep "The Girl in the Fireplace ..."

LOL, I *loved* "Adrift". But yeah, I can see what you mean -- Rodney hit the nail on the head when he whined "Oh come on!" when yet another crisis came up. Still, it certainly made it all riveting for me -- I definitely woke up! :D

Yeah, Nick Digilio that I listen to on WGN, had a thefutoncritic.com to talk about tv last night and mentioned that the show pretty much sucked.

THANK YOU!!! Why try to re-create the wheel? Oh wait...they did.

I'm glad I decided to watch a movie the other night instead of this.

It really bothers me that they'd do something like this. I do admit that they seem to be going to a much different feel than what Angel offers, but jeez, they could have set it in another city and made him have another job—just anything to separate the obvious comparison that was going to come up.

Maybe they thought that they could usurp the previous Angel fanbase by making it fairly similar, but they seem to have misjudged the fact that nothing pisses off fandom more than unoriginal hacks.

AND a fandom that was ROBBED of what should have been at LEAST a few more seasons.

Also? NOBODY does broody-dark-I'm-really-the-good-guy-in-a-bad-guy-sorta-way like David did as Angel.

So do you think it's his fault that it's so similar to Angel or was he the one going, "Uh, hello, I've done this before"?

I watched mostly to mock. Which was fun. But the end? Finding out the woman was the girl he saved all those years ago and is (I'm guessing) going to be his love interest? ICK times a billion.

Right before they went to the second flashback I was like, "What did that first case have to do with . . . oh, the chick is the girl. *groan*" And I'm sure that she'll be his love interest. The formula is Angel meets Beauty and the beast, I guarantee you.

I'm trying, but I actually watched Big Shots Thursday night. Oops. I couldn't help it I was at Rob's and they watched Grey's Anatomy and then it came on and it was hot guys and Josh Malina. I adore Josh Malina. *g*

But yeah, I'm watching Heroes, NCIS, Bones, House, Boston Legal, Ugly Betty, The Office, Supernatural, Stargate Atlantis, maybe Numb3rs (hot peoples), and of course the Daily Show and The Colbert Report 4 nights a week. See no time for new TV!

Lol, yeah.
I must admit, I'm intrigued with how they're going to make it 'new.' Despite of all the similarities and cliche's, I'm willing to watch, because there is a lack of vampire shows...and Jason Dohring.
I love how he was portrayed though, very yummy:D
Also, there's this show on Lifetime called "Blood Ties," which is another vampire/detective sorta thing...but it's Lifetime...so idk;p

I've heard people mention Blood Ties, but I know nothing about it. I think I'm just too arsed to go find out anything about it though. (Not like I don't watch enough tv as it is.)

I give most shows 4 episodes to win me over. Moonlight and Reaper are so far the two shows on probation. I haven't yet gotten around to watching Bionic Woman, but from what others have said, it will probably get the probationary treatment as well.

I'd really love it if some of the new shows this season didn't suck.

I DVRed the show out of curiosity, but only watched about 15 minutes before giving up. I could already tell it was going to be lame.

Bionic Woman is the only one I haven't watched. I'm least interested in it, so it may just get deleted off the DVR. I did DVR Chuck last night, and I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into that. It's gotten such positive feedback!

moonlight
I've only just now watched the first episode of Moonlight and I like it. Like I'm probably going to watch it on purpose because I'm probably going to look forward to it. I hesitate to tell you that, but only slightly.

I get how the basic description - vampire detective in LA, etc - sounds like Angel, but I don't find myself comparing it to Angel at all. It's much more comparable, for me, to Forever Knight. *That* was my first vampire-seeking-redemption-through-good-deeds (as a cop) series. And it had the romance aspect to it that you mention. Forever Knight has its own special place in my heart and I'm sure that lends to my liking Moonlight.

I now want to go searching for transcripts of Lacroix's radio broadcast insights/speeches. *nostalgia*

I think a main reason I like it is the cast. So many of the faces in the episode are people I know and like.

Dean O'Gorman - the T.A. I love him. Young Iolaus, yay! His being in the ep was what got me to watch it, actually.

Sophia Myles. The blonde. I love her, too. She was in Underworld. And was Reinette in Doctor Who. (Still David Tennant's girlfriend? I haven't checked recently.) Isolde in Tristan+Isolde. Anyway, I always like her.

Jason Dohring - Yeah, he is pretty much a 400 year old spoiled rich brat/teenager. But still, I like that he's there.

Shannyn Sossamon - Knight's Tale (meh about her in it, but I love the movie). Was in The Order (also meh about her in it, but I rally like the movie). I think she's a fair actress and I don't hate her.

Kevin Weisman - Marshall from Alias. I was pleasantly surprised to see him. Imdb only has him listed for the one ep, though. :(

Don't know Mick's real name, but I like him so far.

I don't guess those were actually necessary. You probably recognized as many as I did. :)

*one-shoulder shrug* I like it. Hopefully, you still like me. :)

Re: moonlight
I'm not going to be offended by people liking it, or even make fun of people liking it, or suggest that people shouldn't like it! But I am going to criticize it for being very like Angel. Because they could have set this in a different city or given him a different profession. Either of those would have made it less like Angel and would have probably made for a more dynamic choice.

I'm watching the second episode right now and so far I'm liking it better than the first. And I do like vampires. It's hard for me to completely dismiss it.
