Techno-Babble: Sam determines by inspection that the crystals are granite, not volcanic. Sam tells Daniel about the EM (electromagnetic energy) fields the crystals are emitting and that this energy can mimic humans. Sam determines that staff blasts destroyed the crystals by comparing the energy signatures from Teal’c’s staff blast to the staff blasts that the Gateroom took when Apophis attacked. In the course of this experiment, Sam learns that the energy signature of the staff weapons is a gas-plasma laser. The energy in the crystals is decaying and may be radiating a lethal dose to anyone nearby.


They’re staring at that crystal with the same intensity that I watch SG-1.

Daniel Obsession:
What’s the Daniel of it?: Daniel surmises that the crystal quarry must have some religious or ceremonial significance. After locating a whole one for study, Daniel tries to figure out how to use the radio as he calls for Jack (it’s cute). Daniel later informs Sam that Jack’s no longer married and that his son is dead (and how he died). He also notes that Jack doesn’t really tell anyone much until they get to know him. Daniel and Sam spend most of this episode together, being excited about things. They persuade Teal’c to help in their scientific investigations, claiming that they got permission for Teal’c to fire his staff weapon in the Gateroom.

Translation Time/Artifact Alley: Despite Daniel’s earlier assumption that the crystal quarry was of religious significance, it is really a mass grave.

Caffeine Habit: Daniel actually went an entire base-episode without a coffee
