Fandom Grammar Needs YOU!

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_grammar is doing its yearly recruitment drive. This year we are in great need of new members, so if you are interested in grammar and this sounds like fun, I urge you to apply. You do not need to know every grammar rule, and frequently we learn as we answer. The main requirements are that you are enthusiastic about grammar and writing, are willing to research, and can write a comprehensible answer to a question.

ALSO we apply "fandom" to basically anything, so if you are not "in" fandom, that doesn't rule you out. The "fandom" part is in the examples and so far we've used everything from Horatio Hornblower to Harry Potter from Jane Austen to Joss Whedon. ANYTHING in English (or translated into English) is on the table; we just frame our examples using existing characters and situations instead of completely original ones.

Applications must be received by February 29, though there is a writing portion, so I recommend applying before February 15.

If you are not interested, but have a writing-intensive flist, please spread the word. We've got two snazzy banners for promotion (both made by [livejournal.com profile] skroberts), which you can find at the bottom of this post. THANKS!

Okay, I am interested... but I am also English. And aware that the US and UK often differ on what "proper English" actually *is*. (Prepositions seem especially... curious, with American writers over-using "on" to a distracting degree, IMO.)

This would be a problem, wouldn't it?

Actually we love having non-Americans in the mix. We frequently have questions that would benefit from a keen UK-eye. (We used to have some Aussies who were splendid about offering the "other" rules of English.)

We might have you be a specialist on some questions in which your expertise would be obvious, and we'd encourage you to beta questions you don't answer but in which the non-American rules would be different, or vice versa (respond to American betas on your posts).

So, please, apply! :D

Okay, here goes again. I saw, didn't mistake myself but saw, "colleges" used for "colleagues." Still thinking about applying. How many do this? Some details?

I'm a little surprised you came here instead of heading directly to [livejournal.com profile] fandom_grammar. The details are all on the comm if you want to peruse them. (But feel free to ask there if you have additional questions.)

The thing to keep in mind is that while [livejournal.com profile] fandom_grammar is set up to essentially "correct" grammar, its intent is to educate by welcoming all questions and errors, and treating each one with respect. The whole reason we use fandom examples is to make grammar more accessible and less frightening. Basically we're trying to create an environment in which people won't feel judged for not knowing.

So, if you do decide to apply, keep that in mind as you write your sample answer. (That's my one insider tip. ;) )
