One. One Musketeer. Ah-ah-ah-ah!

  • Oct. 24th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
theemdash: (Saiyuki Tenpou)
Over the weekend I watched 4 movies which involve musketeers (including the new version of The Three Musketeers which has a very thin veneer of steampunk—one of the few truly enjoyable things in an otherwise horrible script). [livejournal.com profile] momebie and I have an opinion about whose musketeer is everyone's favorite. So, now we're curious.

I was a (young) teen when the Chris O'Donnell-as-D'Artagnan version came out, and he was, of course, my favorite. that hasn't much changed. Also, his name is abulous.

I really should read the book...

YOU REALLY SHOULD READ THE BOOK!!!!

I think Chris O'Donnell made D'Artagnan my favorite at first, but I have to admit that Aramis has risen as my favorite, mostly because of the religious slant. (I also really love Athos's angst. ♥)

Fun fact: Porthos is the name of Captain Archer's dog in Enterprise. Therefore, he will always be my favorite.

I couldn't even tell you any of their names aside from D'Artagnan, and I think that's mostly to do with The Man in the Iron Mask which isn't even really a movie about them. So there you go.

Which version of The Man in the Iron Mask? I would argue that the 1997 version is very much about them (though D'Artagnan has a slightly larger role, I suppose).

I've read the book, but my opinion in this matter -- which has proved absurdly deep and lasting -- was formed by the 1973 movie in which D'Artagnan was played by Michael York, whom I Did Not Love, while Aramis was played by the swoooooon-inducing Richard Chamberlain omg. These impressions were so strong, I don't even remember who played Athos and Porthos. *g*

I wonder what it would be like to watch one of the movies (or read the book) now that I have slash glasses. *ponders*

Aramis. All three reasons. But mostly because he ended up so sleazy in The Man in the Iron Mask, but his friends still loved him anyway. :P (Who doesn't like the dashing man who wants to be a priest?)

Incidentally, I saw this animated series with The Three Musketeers, and they made Aramis a girl.

Athos is my favourite in the book.

In the movies it depends on the adaption and the actor playing the characters.

My favourite name is Aramis.

I greatly adore Athos. Honestly my love for them is fairly even and it's only the priest thing that edges Aramis forward (and that's really only at this stage in life; when I first read it I believe Athos and D'Artagnan were the two primarily vying for my affection).

D'Artagan was my favorite when I first read the books, but I've come to realize he was something of a douchebag. Porthos actually had fun, so.

I'm planning on rereading the book so my opinion will now change a dozen times, probably. The correct answer is M'Lady deWinter anyway

As a teenager, Athos was always my favorite because he was the author's favorite and/or D'Artagnan's favorite. However, these days, when I look at Athos, I see at bet a tragically misguided man doomed by his upbringing to do a horrible thing to the woman he loved and to hate her for something that wasn't even her fault, without even bothering to find out what it was that happened. She was the perfect woman and the perfect wife, but she was branded like a common prostitute or thief, and that erased her as a person (one has to wonder if she ever was a person to him) and made her into some hateful caricature. In his mind, simply having been with her forever tainted him no matter what he did afterward. In the end, Athos is the iknd of person who puts an ideal over the happiness of real people. In our day, Athos is the fundie father who casts out his gay son because homosexuality is a sin, and the muslim father who stones his own daughter for premarital sex.

Aramis, on the other hand, never put himself as a judge over the woman he loved. She did whatever the hell she wanted and he simply accepted her as she was and loved her, blindly and faithfully, and would have done anything for her, no matter what.
