Sign-ups for [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout 2010 are now open! For those unaware, [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout is a year-long writing challenge. You sign up with a pledge to write a certain number of words and then write to that goal all year.

This year we have 6 pledge levels—single-project pledges at 100K and 150K, and multi-project pledges at 200K, 250K, 300K, and 350K. We've had 139 members travel all the way through 2009 with varying success and are hoping to make 2010 even better with more discussions, more prompts, more short-term challenges, and more writerly community building!

The only participation requirement of the community is that you check-in to report your word count each month, so if you're looking for a writer community or motivation to finally work on your novel or motivation just to keep yourself writing consistently all year, head over to [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout and check out this post with all the information about joining for 2010.

After working through our inaugural year, I think 2010 is going to be even better.

Sign-ups are open until Dec 31, so make sure you
get over there to make a pledge before 2010 starts!

Also, a suggestion to the fandom people around here who are curious but not "sold"—if you're planning to write a Big Bang this year, you might consider signing up for the 100K single-project pledge. Most Big Bangs have a minimum of a 20K completed story so if you plan a longer novel, 60K or 70K, then you should be able to complete the 100K SPP easily after counting all the words of false stats, rewrites, and the final draft.

Just something for you all to consider! :D

I feel torn about this. I wanted to join last year and just didn't get my act together because of the holidays (that whole getting engaged thing kind of distracted me...). This year, I just don't know if it'll work for me. On one hand, I've been writing a lot more; on the other hand, I've got the wedding coming up. And I'm not a novelist--I have two different poetry projects going (well, theoretically anyway) and at least one essay project. Which according to your rules would mean that I'd *have* to sign up for at least 200K, and honestly I don't think I've written 200K yet so far in my LIFE, let alone all in one year that also happens to be the year I'm planning a wedding. I think this means that your comm just isn't going to be right for me. But I'd be interested to hear what you think.

It sounds like the comm might not be right for you this year, however, I assure you that we don't remove people for not meeting their pledges. So, if you wanted to give it a shot, that's your prerogative.

We do keep track of how many words people are able to actually complete in a year and so people who miss their goals can affect our decisions for what pledges are used in following years—that's why we have the 100K and 150K pledges this year. So as long as you make an honest effort towards meeting whatever you pledge, we're more than happy to have you.

Thanks, Alli. I think I'm not going to sign up this year. It wouldn't feel right to me to sign up for a "goal" I pretty much already know I could never achieve--I mean, I might surprise myself, or I might have a really productive autumn next year, or something like that, but chances are I'll get nowhere near such a high number. And I don't want to make myself feel bad for signing up and then "failing", you know? I want to write more, but I feel like whatever I write is a success. So, maybe next year.

Do you know how much I love to see people making rational decisions to not make themselves crazy? :D

I want to do it.

I am terrified.

You're smart, then! It's a pretty weighty challenge. I pledged 200K this year and I'll end short of 170K, I think.

I know you can do NaNo, though, so if you concentrate on a novel-length project, I don't think you'd have any trouble completing a 100K pledge.

The community is going to do a lot this year to help keep people motivated and I'm really excited. JOIN ME ON MY INSANITY.

I was thinking about the 100k. I actually think that might be more difficult for me than 200k of random things, but then I think that maybe it would be better for me, too.

I PROBABLY WILL. ohgodohgodohgod

I think the 100K will be much healthier for me even though I like to flit between projects.

I'd like to enter, but first I have to think logically if I'll be able to write that much with TWO novels I'm currently editing and hoping to send to publishers. Hmmm...

Words that are being edited do count—as long as you keep track of them.

Hmmm...okay. As in words added while editing?

Yep. Basically every new word you add can be counted towards your word total.

Okay, cool. I will think about this for a day or two and decide if it's something I think I can tackle. :)

Yes, please give thought to it. We're not concerned that every member stays on pace with their pledge, but we want people to commit to something that is realistic and won't be a source of stress.
