theemdash: SG-1 classic team (SG-1 Team)
snatched from [livejournal.com profile] zakai_. . .

1. What is your fandom of choice? (only one please)
Stargate: SG-1

2. If you follow other fandoms, you may enter them here:
I'm only listing fandoms that I read/write fic in: Fullmetal Alchemist, Harry Potter, and Saiyuki are the ones I regularly follow. I dabble in Stargate: Atlantis, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Teenange Mutant Ninja Turtles. I follow about a zillion other fandoms in terms of watching the shows and being obsessive.

3. How long have you been in your fandom?
I started watching SG-1 in March of 2004 and had my first fanfic posted some time in May '04.

4. Does your fandom originate from a: TV series, movie, anime, book, cartoon, other?
Stargate: SG-1 is a tv series, but it was based off a movie.

5. What do you like most about the TV series, movie, anime, book, cartoon, other?
The Stargate is one of the best storytelling devices because it allowed the show to explore various periods of human history and completely alien cultures. I loved the emphasis in the first few years on exploration, mythology, and religion.

6. What do you like least?
I think bullet points will best express my rage.
  • "Moebius"

  • Doe-eyed Majors

  • The "Unending" Rant

  • An inability to express grief (with the exception of "Revelations")

7. Who are your favorite characters? Why?
Daniel Jackson is my all-time favorite character in the Stargate universe and I could pretty much write a treatise on why. The short answer is that he's wonderfully complex and has great character development throughout the series. The beauty is that the man we see in an episode like "Prototype" where Daniel is almost without compassion is most definitely the same man we saw for a moment in "Bloodlines" way back in Season 1. So even in this wonderful character arc, we can always see the roots of his development, and that's something that's really special. I don't think many shows have characters that are as wonderfully nuanced and telegraphed as Daniel.

8. Who are your least favorite characters? Why?
Sam Carter through no fault of her own. Rob Cooper is my Carter scapegoat because in my mind he's the one taking out his Jack and Sam barbies and forcing them to kiss. "You will have chemistry, you will!" I feel like Carter has been sorely mishandled, swinging her back and forth from being the super-scientist with all the answers and being an emotional wreck because she's in love with an unattainable man. They just never figured out how to balance her personality and they never allowed her to grow. The few times when she could have moved on from Jack, they just didn't let her. Also, "Moebius." Pshaw.

9. Do you follow ‘pairings’ in your fandom? If so, which ones, and why? If not, why?
Jack/Daniel is my main pairing because the two of them have insane amounts of chemistry. Also, they banter and I like the banter.

Okay, really, this is why I slash Jack/Daniel. They're friends, clearly. They have a strong foundation that allows them to communicate semi-telepathically and they just know each other to this truly terrifying degree. But at the same time, they have tension because they don't fit together the way "natural" friends do. They probably wouldn't have met under normal circumstances and become buddies even though they share similar traumatic experiences that shaped who they became. Plus they're boss and employee, essentially, except not really because Daniel's kind of his own boss (or at least seems to fancy himself that way) and they clash philosophically in this wonderful military-v-civilian way that's an ongoing theme in the SG-verse. And they're both stubborn, always right, and no matter how emotionally open they seem, what you see is not always what you get. They're similar and dissimilar in just the right ways, and I'm not sure I can explain it more articulately than that without writing an actual essay.

Outside of Jack/Daniel, I'm also a fan of Daniel/Vala, Daniel/Sha're (I love a good Daniel/Sha're fic), Daniel/Cameron, and a little OT3 with any combination of Jack, Daniel, Vala, and Cameron, or Jack/Daniel/Sam. Okay, so basically I'll read almost any pairing with Daniel in it. ;)

10. Do you support the ‘slashing’ of characters in your fandom?
Ha. Just maybe.

To be honest, one of the things I like about slash is that it allows writers to explore the possibilities of a universe. I mean, one of the things I find particularly fascinating about slash in Stargate is that it all has to operate within DADT. So writers have to either choose to have the relationship going on in secret, or find a creative way to eliminate or circumvent DADT. I like having that kind of freedom to play within a universe and watch what happens.

11. What differences are there between the original and how your fandom views it?
The beauty about fanon is that it can be ignored. I don't think there is really any consensus on anything that is wildly different from canon anyway. But if you go by fanon views . . . Jack is either 9 or 14 years older than Daniel, Daniel was abused by about 20 different foster families and is addicted to coffee, Teal'c only says "Indeed," and Sam is a vindictive bitch.

What's truly awesome is that some of that is actually based on canon.

12. What do you like most about your fandom?
In general the fans are wildly supportive and kind. I've never had someone be out-and-out rude to me and I've mostly seen people who truly enjoy discussing the show, creating fanworks, and interacting in an awesomely geeky way. Plus, Stargate fans know how to have a good time.

13. What do you like least about your fandom?
. . .

Um . . . that people write OOC? I have no idea how to answer this question specifically for Stargate because I think most of my "like least" things involve fanfiction pet peeves. The only other possible thing is that I wish Stargate: Atlantis engaged me more because then I'd have two SG-verses I'd like to play in.

14. Do you consider yourself active in your fandom? Why?
Absolutely. I created and moderate [livejournal.com profile] stargatefic and [livejournal.com profile] atlantisfic and write my own fanfic. In addition to all the fanfic promoting, I volunteer at the Stargate Track at Dragon*Con as the games coordinator. This means that McKay and I are the brains behind Stargate adaptations of board games, writing trivia questions, and pushing for creative contests.

15. What fandom related activities do you participate in? Why?
I read and write fanfic. I specifically moderate [livejournal.com profile] stargatefic and help out around [livejournal.com profile] atlantisfic. And I'm a Dragon*Con nerd.

Why? Because it's fun!

16. What fandom related activities do you not participate in? Why?
I don't draw or create graphics or vids. I don't have particular skill in those areas so doing those things requires a lot of time and patience and I'd rather be doing what's "easier," also what holds more interest for me (writing fic).

17. What websites do you frequent that are fandom related?
Do convention websites count? ;) I visit the Stargate Offworld Track forums for Dragon*Con and visit various reference sites for fic research (StargateWiki, Stargate Transcripts, and Stargate Caps are some of my favorites). Around lj I play at [livejournal.com profile] stargatefic, [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, [livejournal.com profile] jackslashdaniel, and [livejournal.com profile] daniel_vala.

18. What people come to mind when you think about your fandom? (fan artists, fiction writers, web hosts, community moderators, etc) Why?
Mostly it's people who are on my flist, which is why I'm not going to bother naming them. You people, that's who I think of!

19. How does fandom affect your life and your surroundings?
Everything I do is because of fandom.

Hah. Okay, not everything. But close. ;)

SG-1 doesn't solely influence my life because I have so many fandoms. I do have fandom posters/pictures in every room of my apartment, my keychains are all fandom-oriented (sadly my Stargate broke off), and my desk at work is covered in fandom pictures, calendars, and figures. I have a lot of friends who are fandom-friendly and I have trouble going a single day without a flail or random quote from some fandom. To be honest, fandom makes me happy because it gives me a little bit of an escape and is a place where I can be giggly and flaily for a few minutes whenever I need it.

20. How much time do you spend a week in fandom related activities?
I spend quite a bit of time reading and writing fanfic or looking at fanart or icons, and I spend a lot of time acquiring new shows or catching up on old ones. . . . But if you make me count hours I will probably start crying.

21. Are you a ‘settler’, someone who stays in one fandom for a long time; or are you a ‘wanderer’, someone who goes from fandom to fandom in shorter periods of time?
I'd call myself a settler who wanders. I do stay in fandoms for long periods of time, but I don't stay in just one. Right now I'm actively writing and reading in 4 fandoms and I'm pretty happy with that. I tend to not "leave" a fandom, but my activity may decrease for a little while. So, wandering settler.

22. Are there conventions related to your fandom?
GateCon is the only big exclusive-Stargate con I know about, but I'm sure there are some other ones that are SG-exclusive. Going to Dragon*Con can be a Stargate Con if you just hang around the SG Track all weekend. ;)

23. If so, have you ever attended one?
I haven't been to GateCon, but I regularly attend Dragon*Con, FX, and MegaCon. Last year I also hit up Comic Con.

24. Have you ever dressed up as a character from your fandom? Why or why not?
I have an SGC jacket which I will randomly wear, but I don't have a 'Jackson' strip for it. I haven't really gotten into cosplay, but my husband is McKay so at cons I'm "Mrs. McKay" by association.

25. Is there anything you want to add that isn’t covered in this meme?
No matter how many fandoms I gain, I have no intention of ever forgetting about SG-1. And for anyone who's worried about that, I'd like to remind you that I was active in TMNT starting in 1992 and posted a TMNT fic yesterday.

Well, that was a wonderful distraction from the writing I should be doing. :D
