Previous Episode: Episode 1.21 “Politics” here.

Episode 1.22 “Within the Serpent’s Grasp”

Planetary Tally: SG-1 gated to the ship in orbit around a planet, but since they never set foot on the planet, it’s not counted.
Season/Series Total: 19

Better than the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom.

Episodic References: “Politics”—the closure of the Stargate Program is heavily referenced during the teaser. “Thor’s Hammer”—Kendra and her experience as host (and that she could control her Goa’uld) is referenced by Daniel.

Quote(s) of the Week:
Teal’c: I believe a medical attack could be successful.
Jack: Surgical attack, Teal’c. It’s called a surgical attack.

Jack: [referring to serpent guards] I always get a happy, tingling feeling when I see those guys.

Daniel: Teal’c, what is this?
Teal’c: It is a long-range visual communication device, somewhat like your television—only much further advanced.
Jack: Think it gets Showtime?

Think it gets show time? –Jack

Jack: Uh. Seen a bathroom around here?

Jack: I suggest the two of you figure out how to get us back home
Sam: Sir, the only way to do that is to turn us around and go back to where we started.
Daniel: Right, I’ll just go tell the pilot.

Klorel: You’ll only hurt your friend.
Jack [referring to Skarra]: He’s a tough kid.

Hammond: I guess Dr. Jackson’s lucky.
Walter: How so, sir?
Hammond: Well, he won’t have to be around to watch his nightmare come true for the second time.

Still in Kansas:

A Galaxy Not-So-Far Away:

Introducing:
the zat’nik’tel, or zat gun; Goa’uld long-range communication device; the inside of a ha’tak (Jack and Teal’c saw a ha’tak on screen in “Singularity”); Klorel

Goa’uld Karaoke Night!

Hello, Again: Sgt. Walter Davis, Maj. Ferriti, Apophis, Skarra

Stargate Mythos: as a result of the hearing in “Politics,” the Stargate Program is shut down; zats use a different form of energy than the staff weapons, they are less destructive but still quite deadly—one shot stuns, two shots kill, and three shots disintegrate; Goa’uld have long-range communication devices; Goa’uld door locks are hidden in the intricate carvings and raised images on the walls; a Goa’uld can rest in his sarcophagus; the ha’tak SG-1 infiltrates is a different design than what Teal’c is used to—the hyper-launch was different and Teal’c points out that most ha’taks don’t have Stargates (also this design travels much faster); a Goa’uld ha’tak vessel can travel at ten times the speed of light (the older version anyway); Klorel explains to Jack that Apophis seeded the “queen mother” (which one would assume is not Sha’re/Amaunet) and that he is therefore the son of Apophis; apparently zatting a Goa’ulded host can let the host surface (assuming the host is strong enough)

Fashion Week: SG-1 is wearing green BDUs at the beginning of the episode. They trade in the green for some very covert-op black uniforms.

Respectfully Yours: Carter says “with respect, sir” when judging that Jack is making an emotional decision regarding grabbing Skarra.

Chain of Command: SG-1 completely disobeys orders and hops through the ‘Gate to prevent a Goa’uld attack on Earth (and to keep the Stargate Program alive).

Walter, Ferriti, and Hammond settling up on their bet about how
long it would take SG-1 to jump planet once the program
was shut down. (Hammond won by guessing 5 seconds.)

Putzing with Props: Jack punches Klorel when Klorel suggests that Skarra “suffered greatly and gave in easily.”

Jack O’Neill Cliche Count:
Sam utters a cliché, commenting that Skarra is “not exactly a chip off the old block.”
Jack greets Skarra with “long time no see.”

Daniel’s Dead: Season/Series Total: 3

Murray Alert: Teal’c has on a ski cap the entire episode. (please note: Teal’c makes the best worried face in this episode.)
Season/Series Total: 9

Techno-Babble: After gating to the address Daniel brought from the alternate reality, Sam theorizes that the seismic activity that knocked them to the ground was a planetary shift. She is impressed by the force field covering the opening on the ha’tak. She also drools over the fact that they are traveling faster than light and then realizes that because they’re on a ship (that is no long in orbit around a planet with a valid Stargate address) the Stargate is inactive because the point of origin is no longer valid. Sam states that traveling at ten times the speed of light from the planet to Earth would take at least a year. When Sam and Daniel are planting C-4, she states that fuel is combustible, and determines that if they blow up one of the death gliders in the hanger, they can probably start a chain reaction. Sam also notes that the naquadah from the Gate will increase the blast from the C-4.

Daniel Obsession:
What’s the Daniel of it?:

After staring longingly at the ‘Gate, probably thinking of losing the chance to study new cultures—I mean rescue Sha’re and Skaara—Daniel argues for SG-1 to ignore their orders and to go to the address he received in the alternate reality. After some very passionate arguments, SG-1 is once again insubordinate, dashing off through the ‘Gate to save the planet.

"Carter, now is not the time to be looking up slash. Yes, Daniel and I
have an inappropriately close relationship, but get over it!"

They arrive in what appears to be a shipping facility and are poking around when there is some sort of “planetary shift” that knocks them all to the ground. Daniel dials the ‘Gate back to Earth and—nothing. SG-1 hides just before a cadre of serpent guards march into the Gateroom. And Daniel stupidly leaves his night vision goggles lying on the floor (really, Danny, where’s your head?). After sneaking around the complex, SG-1 discover that they’re on a ship and that the ship is en route to Earth (see, Jack, Daniel wasn’t crazy about that whole alternate reality thing). The jolt they first felt was hyper-launch. Back in the Gateroom, the commander of the ship appears—it’s Skarra! Or rather Klorel. Daniel agrees with Jack’s plan to grab Skarra, remembering that Kendra told them that she was able to fight past her Goa’uld. Daniel and Sam are dispatched to plant C-4 all over the ha’tak, while Jack and Teal’c get captured (not part of the plan). When Jack and Teal’c are taken to the pel’tac, Sam and Daniel set a timer to detonate the ship in 24 hours. Daniel turns into a total badass and wields two guns during the attack on the pel’tac. He’s surprised by Klorel, and his guns go skidding. Then Daniel gets another taste of the ribbon device used by the Goa’uld. He is saved when Jack finally shoots Klorel (after a heart-breaking moment where Jack has to choose). It takes Daniel a few minutes to recover from being ribboned—he’s conscious, but obviously not with it. In those moments, SG-1 discovers that the ha’tak was traveling much faster than they thought and they don’t have 24 hours before they reach Earth. Earth looms before them...

Translation Time/Artifact Alley: Daniel translates a little Goa’uld to explain that the Jaffa are being summoned to a gathering.

Caffeine Habit:

Headgear:

Bandana: Season/Series Total: 1
Flak Helmet: Season/Series Total: 10
Fly Hat: Season/Series Total: 2
Other: 2—Daniel straps on some night-vision goggles and wears a ski cap the entire episode
Season/Series Total: 6

Perfect Vision: We enjoy a glasses-less Daniel for the whole episode. I'd make a crack about him finally being able to afford contacts, but I think it's just because his glasses would slip off his nose or something.

Oh, Danny Boy: Season/Series Total: 4

Shooting a Load: 2—Daniel wields his berretta when SG-1 follows the Jaffa to their “gathering,” when Sam goes in to plant C-4 on a death glider, and when he and Sam are hiding from Klorel’s guard behind the Gate. Daniel accepts a grenade from Sam as they prepare their attack on the pel’tac.
Daniel fires approximately twelve shots out of two berrettas during the initial attack on the pel’tac. He fires another 10 or so when they enter the room proper.
Season/Series Total: 6

As hot as the double barrels is—Danny really needs to learn that
he might actually hit something if he opens his eyes!

Mop Up, Aisle 5: 10—turning around after staring at the ‘Gate; smoldering at Jack; Danny in black; snarky Daniel, sneaky Daniel; Daniel + gun; hunkering down behind the Gate; staring at Sam as she sets the timer; Daniel + guns!

Sam and Daniel prepare to rescue their boyfriend Jack.

Jack Cap O’ the Week

I can’t help but love the cap and the gun.
