Killed Through Love

I want to play a little game. It's called "Did Em Kill A Character In Your Fandom?" As many of you are well aware, I have a tendency to fall in love with characters who are doomed. Almost all of my favorite characters die. That's not even a spoiler any more, it's just a pattern. Thinking about this has made me wonder exactly how many characters I've killed through love. So, the "game."

1. Name a fandom (one at a time, please; feel free to name anything and I'll tell you if I've seen it).

2. I will respond with my favorite character and whether or not that character dies in canon. (I will screen my replies with the character names to hopefully avoid spoilers.)

3. At the end of this "game" I'll count fandoms and characters and determine how many characters I've killed through love.

Em's Personal Fandom

When I signed up for NaBloPoMo, I got the idea to post things with a bit more content than my usual fandom flailing. Of course this wouldn't be my journal without fandom flailing so I had to "find the fandom" in this more content-ful posting.

Since I've been getting more into anime fandoms—which I'm sure is perplexing and disappointing to some of my SG-1 fellows—I've been considering why I am drawn to these specific fandoms, why I am drawn to these specific characters, how on earth I can possibly be drawn to these two completely different stories! All of this led up to some very thinky thoughts about the nature of my personal fandom and finally this: a series dedicated to exploring my personal fandom, why I follow certain fandoms, why I get so involved in some, and, most importantly, how my fandoms relate to each other. I'm planning to cover a number of topics—that I hope will be of some interest to you—to explore the many, many connections I have uncovered with a little self-reflection.

Core Fandoms While there are 30 or more series that I have followed through to the end (or will follow), I will be mainly focusing on what I consider my "core" fandoms. These are the fandoms that mean the most to me emotionally, not just the ones in which I am actively involved. So, the posts in this series will have quite a bit on Whedon-verse, SG-1, Harry Potter, TMNT, Saiyuki, and FMA (mostly because it's new and shiny). Also, I'll be looking back, back, way back to my first fandoms and how they may have influenced my current preferences (yes, that means Star Wars and Transformers).

Spoilers As a warning to people who are not caught up in all my fandoms, or who haven't yet explored one or more of them, there will be spoilers in these posts. As a courtesy, I am planning to drop in spoiler warnings for anything that seems major, but there is a high probability that you will be spoiled for a few minor things.

Take a Chance I will probably be talking about a fandom you don't know; I hope that doesn't put anyone off. I strongly encourage you to take a moment to see fandom through my eyes and learn a little something about a fandom you don't know. Honestly, I think you'll be surprised and you may even walk away with a new fandom to explore.

Upcoming Posts I'm not exactly sure how many posts I'll be making in this series, but for now, you can look forward to the following topics.
  • Fandom: Not So Diverse

  • The Ghosts of Fandoms Past

  • OTP Archetypes

  • Em's Favorite Characters and Why They Die

  • Fanfic: The Unfinished Story

  • Cross-Fandom Fanfic Cliches

I am very much looking forward to starting this. The first post should be up by Monday.
